Review- Sacha Buttercup Setting Powder

Though I live in Trinidad and Tobago where Sacha Cosmetics is manufactured, I must admit that I have been quite late on the Sacha Buttercup Setting Powder bandwagon. For the last few years I have been using my MAC Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder to set my under eye concealer but it’s almost finished. Occasionally, I would use Sacha’s (Translucent) Setting Powder as an alternative. However, after seeing countless reviews on the Buttercup Powder on YouTube and in the blogosphere I decided to see what all the hype was about. One of my favourite beauty bloggers Jackie Aina swears by Sacha Buttercup to set her highlight. If it’s Jackie-approved I believe it’s definitely worth a try.

Sacha Cosmetics’ website gives the following description of the product.

Buttercup is completely flash-friendly, with just one shade for all skin tones and skin types. It can be used to highlight, set your concealer or can be applied liberally over the entire face. It does not give off the white cast or turn ashy in bright lighting or photos, as with other setting powders. Buttercup Powder absorbs oil, reduces shine and keeps your face matte for hours. It is finely milled so it glides onto the skin, blends easily and softens the appearance of fine lines and pores, without looking caked on.

Of course I had to see for myself if the product met all these grandiose claims.

By swatching the loose powder on my hand I could see that it disappears perfectly into my bare skin. Not a trace of the product is seen once it is blended on my hand. This was a great first impression.

Powder is blended to the right of the swatch.

The real test was its performance in setting concealer. It set both of my everyday concealer options (Maybelline Fit Me and L’Oreal True Match) without creasing. It gave a nice highlighted glow to my NC50 skin and it wasn’t too yellow either.

I did use the Sacha Buttercup Setting powder all over my face as well. I’m not sure about the claims that it absorbs oil, keeps your face matte, or softens the appearance of pores. That did not happen with my oily skin. I doubt I’ll continue using it for this purpose since MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish Natural is my holy grail all-over powder.

With respect to the assertion that the powder is completely flash-friendly. This was surely the case when the powder was dusted on. However, when used with the baking technique, it left me looking like Casper’s big sister when I tried to take a picture with flash. Honestly, this happens with most setting powders. Therefore, be wary of baking your face if you’re going to be anywhere near flash photography.

I also bought the compact version of this powder for on the go touch ups since my t-zone can get really oily. In my opinion the Buttercup compact is better for absorbing oil than the loose powder.

All in all, I will definitely recommend Sacha Buttercup Setting Powder for medium to deep skin tones. It’s a definite winner for me for setting concealer.
