Affordable highlighters for an everyday glow

Newsflash!!!

Glowing, dewy skin is in; so in that influential magazines have attempted to describe a ‘new’ makeup technique- strobing. Don’t get caught up in the hype though; strobing is just highlighting but without the complementary shadows from contouring. You know, what a lot of us have been doing forever.

Just the reaction on social media to Champagne Pop- Becca’s Shimmering Skin Perfector created in collaboration with beauty guru Jaclyn Hill- is evidence of the popularity of highlighting and illuminating products.

For years I have been using the now discontinued Revlon Colorstay Mineral Finishing Powder in Sunkiss as a highlighter. However, I’ve always been on the lookout for other affordable options to achieve the J. Lo glow.

My top pics are:

  •  Maybelline Master Hi-Light Highlighting Bronzer in Deep Bronze– What I like the most about this product is that it is in mosaic form. When you swirl a brush throughout all the different shades you get a true bronze colour which in itself makes a lovely highlight on dark skin tones. However, I am obsessed with the lightest shade which translates to a beautiful champagne gold colour that I use on my cheekbone or as a brow highlight (I’m MAC NC50). The texture of this bronzer also impressed me. It is very finely-milled and shows up on the skin more as a luminous sheen and less as glittery shimmer.

  • Sacha Cosmetics Powder Blush in the shade Radiant Glow– This is a gorgeous light gold colour that is the perfect highlighter shade for my complexion. When applied on the skin it does exactly what the name suggests- it gives a radiant glow. This product is a bit more on the shimmery side though so you have to be mindful of this when applying. The texture is somewhat powdery as well.

  • Maybelline Fit Me Bronzer in Deep Bronze– While this product didn’t work for me as a bronzer, I like using it for days when I’m going for a more subtle highlight. However, you need to use a small dense brush to get the best colour payoff from this product.

  • Sacha Cosmetics Bronzer in Bejewelled– I call this the disco ball of bronzers. This is a light bronze colour that really complements my skin. This is definitely has the most shimmer than any other product on the list (so be careful around flash photography). However, for those who want to shine bright like a diamond, this product is a winner.

If I had to choose one, it would definitely be the Maybelline Master Hi-Light simply because it is the most versatile affordable highlighting product that I have tried thus far. Now if Sacha’s Bejewelled had the texture and finish of the Maybelline Master Hi-Light that would have been a sure winner in my books.
